GrapheneOS Supported Devices: Which Pixel Phone Should You Buy?
GrapheneOS only supports devices that meet a strict hardware-security bar — and right now, that means Google Pixel. This guide walks through every currently supported Pixel model, how long each one will keep receiving updates, and which one we recommend depending on your budget.
Why GrapheneOS only runs on Pixel
GrapheneOS depends on hardware that most Android phones simply don't ship with: a Titan M2 secure element, verified boot with user-replaceable keys, and timely firmware updates covering the bootloader, modem and Trusted Execution Environment. Google Pixel is the only line that meets all three at once.
That's why a phone like a Samsung or a OnePlus — even a recent flagship — can't run GrapheneOS at full security. The Pixel hardware lock is a feature, not a limitation.
Currently supported Pixel devices
Sorted from newest to oldest. "Support until" is the date Google has committed to ship security patches — once it passes, GrapheneOS stops releasing updates for that model.
Pixel 10 / 10 Pro / 10 Pro XL / 10 Pro Fold
Security updates until October 2032
Latest Tensor G5, seven years of guaranteed Google security updates and the longest GrapheneOS lifetime. The best choice if you want to install once and forget about it.
Pixel 9 / 9 Pro / 9 Pro XL / 9 Pro Fold
Security updates until October 2031
Tensor G4, full hardware-backed security features, excellent value for money on the refurbished market.
Pixel 8 / 8 Pro / 8a
Security updates until October 2030 (8/8 Pro), July 2031 (8a)
First generation with seven years of updates. Great sweet spot between price and longevity.
Pixel 7 / 7 Pro / 7a
Security updates until October 2027 (7/7 Pro), May 2028 (7a)
Tensor G2. Still actively supported by GrapheneOS, but fewer years of updates left than the Pixel 8 generation.
Pixel 6 / 6 Pro / 6a
Security updates until October 2026 (6/6 Pro), July 2027 (6a)
Tensor G1. Approaching end of guaranteed updates — fine for a short-term device, not recommended for a long-term install.
Pixel 5a and earlier
Security updates until Ended
No longer receiving Google security patches. GrapheneOS does not support devices past their hardware-backed update window.
Which Pixel should you buy for GrapheneOS?
Best long-term pick: Pixel 10 or Pixel 9. Both come with seven years of guaranteed updates and the most recent secure-element hardware. If you can afford a new one, this is the install-once option.
Best value: Pixel 8 or Pixel 8a on the refurbished market. Same seven-year update commitment as the Pixel 9, typically 40–60 % cheaper.
Tight budget: Pixel 7a. Still receives updates until 2028 — a fair compromise if you'll replace the phone within two to three years.
Avoid: Pixel 5a or earlier. Anything past its Google support window is unsafe to use as a daily driver, regardless of how cheap it looks.
Buying tips
- Prefer the unlocked, sold-by-Google variant. Carrier-locked Pixels can block the bootloader unlock that GrapheneOS requires.
- Check the model number against the GrapheneOS official device list before buying — a handful of regional SKUs aren't supported.
- When buying refurbished, ask for the original IMEI and battery health. Both matter more for longevity than cosmetic condition.
